Owner-occupiers
If you own and live in your home in England or Wales, you're the core eligible group. You apply through an MCS-certified installer, who handles the paperwork and deducts the grant from your invoice.
Landlords
Private landlords can claim the grant on rental properties on the same terms — see the landlord grants page for detail. It can also lift the property's appeal and EPC.
Tenants
If you rent, you can't apply yourself — the property owner must. But it's worth raising with your landlord, since the grant covers most of the cost and improves the home. We can capture your details and an installer can speak to your landlord.
Social housing
Social housing is generally not eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme specifically; other funding routes exist for registered providers. If you're a social tenant, speak to your housing provider.
Common questions
Can landlords get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
Yes. Private landlords can claim the grant on rental properties in England and Wales, the same as owner-occupiers.
Can tenants apply for the heat pump grant?
No — only the property owner can apply. Tenants should raise it with their landlord, who is eligible.
Is social housing eligible?
Social housing is generally not eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme specifically. Registered providers have other funding routes.
Do I need to live in the property?
No — the property doesn't have to be your main residence, which is what makes landlord applications possible.
