If you heat with an oil-fired boiler, you're in one of the most favourable positions for a heat pump grant right now.
The higher £9,000 grant
From 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, eligible off-gas-grid homes currently on oil can claim £9,000 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme — £1,500 more than the standard amount — recognising that off-grid homes have the most to gain from switching. It's deducted from your invoice by the installer, with 0% VAT on top.
And real running-cost savings
Oil is expensive, so replacing it with an efficient heat pump usually cuts running costs as well — see the heat pump vs oil comparison and the savings calculator. You also drop oil deliveries, tank upkeep and price-spike risk.
Eligibility
Standard Boiler Upgrade Scheme rules apply: you own the home, you have a valid EPC, and you use an MCS installer. The off-grid uplift specifically requires that oil (or LPG) is your current primary heating fuel and you're off the gas grid.
Common questions
Is there a grant to replace an oil boiler with a heat pump?
Yes. Off-grid oil homes can claim the higher £9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant toward an air source or ground source heat pump, available 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027.
Why do oil homes get £9,000 instead of £7,500?
The uplift recognises that off-gas-grid homes on oil or LPG face higher fuel costs and have the most to gain from switching to a heat pump.
Will I save money replacing oil with a heat pump?
Usually yes. Oil is expensive, so an efficient heat pump typically reduces running costs, on top of the larger grant. See our savings calculator.
What if I miss the £9,000 window?
After 31 March 2027 the standard £7,500 grant still applies (subject to the scheme continuing), so a heat pump remains well supported — but the uplift is worth acting on while it's available.
