Heat pump grant eligibility

The full list of what you need to qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme — and the few things that can hold an application up.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is open to most homeowners, but there are clear conditions. Here's the complete picture.

You generally qualify if…

  • You own the property. Owner-occupiers and private landlords both qualify. Social housing is generally excluded.
  • You're replacing fossil-fuel or electric heating. Gas, oil, LPG or electric systems all count. You can't claim to add a heat pump alongside a working gas boiler (hybrids aren't eligible).
  • You have a valid EPC. Issued within the last 10 years, with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation (or you're exempt). See the EPC page.
  • You're in England or Wales. Scotland has a separate scheme via Home Energy Scotland.
  • You use an MCS-certified installer who belongs to a consumer code (RECC or HIES).
Not sure you qualify — for example you rent, or want to keep a gas boiler too? It's still worth checking. Run the calculator or call us; an installer can advise on your situation.

What can hold things up

The most common snag is an EPC that recommends insulation you haven't yet done. Installing that insulation (or qualifying for an exemption) clears it. A missing or expired EPC is easily resolved with a new assessment.

Common questions

Is the grant means-tested?

No. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is not based on income, benefits, age or savings. Any eligible homeowner qualifies regardless of personal circumstances.

Do I need a certain EPC rating?

There's no minimum rating, but you need a valid EPC (within 10 years) with no outstanding loft or cavity wall insulation recommendations. See our EPC page.

Can I get it if I'm replacing electric heating?

Yes. Homes replacing standard electric heating qualify for the £7,500 grant.

What if I rent?

Tenants can't apply — the property owner must. If you rent, speak to your landlord; landlords are eligible to apply.
