The Boiler Upgrade Scheme isn't just for owner-occupiers. Private landlords in England and Wales can claim it on let properties, and there are good reasons to.
What landlords get
The same £7,500 grant (or £9,000 for off-grid oil and LPG homes during the uplift), deducted from the installation invoice, with 0% VAT. The property must meet the usual conditions — valid EPC, replacing fossil-fuel or electric heating, MCS installer.
Why it's worth it for landlords
- Lower upfront cost on a long-life heating system (15–20 years).
- Improved property appeal and future-proofing against tightening energy rules for rented homes.
- Lower running costs for tenants, especially replacing oil, LPG or electric heating.
Common questions
Can landlords claim the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
Yes. Private landlords can claim £7,500 (or £9,000 off-grid) per eligible rental property in England and Wales.
Can I claim for more than one property?
Yes, each eligible property is assessed on its own merits. There's no rule limiting landlords to a single claim.
Does the property need to be empty?
No, but installation does cause some disruption, so it's worth coordinating with your tenant around timing.
Will it improve my EPC?
Often, though the EPC method can treat electric-based heating cautiously. It future-proofs the property against tightening rental energy standards.
