Air source heat pump grants
Air source heat pumps are the most-grant-funded option — £7,500 as standard, deducted from your invoice. Here's how the funding works.

Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) are the most common type fitted in UK homes and are fully covered by the main grant.
What you get
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 toward an air source heat pump — the same as for ground source — and £9,000 for off-grid oil and LPG homes during the uplift window. Ground source heat pumps also get £7,500 but cost more to install, which is why air source is the popular choice for most homes.
Why air source is usually the practical pick
Air source units are far cheaper to install than ground source (no boreholes or trenches), suit the majority of homes including terraces and many flats, and the grant covers a large share of the cost. After the grant, typical net costs land from the low thousands to around £12,000.
Common questions
How much is the grant for an air source heat pump?
£7,500 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, or £9,000 for off-grid oil and LPG homes during the uplift window (21 Jul 2026 – 31 Mar 2027).
Is the grant the same for air and ground source?
Yes, both get £7,500. But ground source costs more to install, so air source usually has the lower net cost.
Does the grant cover the whole air source install?
A large part. After £7,500, most homeowners pay a net amount from the low thousands up to around £12,000 depending on system size.
Can I get an air-to-air heat pump grant?
Air-to-air systems have a smaller separate grant and don't provide hot water, so they're a partial solution. Most homes choose a standard air source (air-to-water) heat pump for the £7,500.
